France’s Education Reforms: New Measures for Lycée and Collège Students

Anne Genetet, France’s Education Minister, has proposed significant education reforms including mandatory exams for students to progress to lycée starting in 2027. The changes, part of the ‘Acte 2 du choc des savoirs,’ also involve the continuation of ability-based group classes in collèges, with new hiring of educational staff in sensitive areas. A new anticipatory math exam will be introduced for the bac in 2026, while efforts are being made to ensure sufficient teaching resources for struggling students. These reforms aim to improve academic outcomes amidst rising student failure rates.
