France’s Justice Minister Didier Migaud Acknowledges Prison Overcrowding Challenges
During a recent interview, French Justice Minister Didier Migaud admitted the government will fall short of its prison construction goals, proposing only 6,421 new places by 2027 instead of the promised 15,000. This shortfall, attributed to significant delays since Emmanuel Macron’s 2017 pledge, highlights the urgency of addressing severe overcrowding in French prisons, currently housing 80,000 inmates in facilities designed for 62,000. Migaud suggested exploring smaller prison models to alleviate the situation more effectively.
