French Farmers Protest Against Strict Agricultural Regulations

On January 6, 2024, dozens of farmers in France staged a slow movement protest, termed ‘operation escargot,’ towards Paris, driven by complaints over excessive agricultural regulations and the EU-Mercosur trade agreement. The protests involved tractor blockades on major routes, including RN4 and A7. The farmers’ union, Coordination rurale, plans protests lasting up to five days and demands an end to strict compliance measures. Prime Minister François Bayrou has offered a meeting to discuss their concerns, but the farmers seek a quicker resolution.
