French Ministry of Interior Faces Penalties Over Illegal Use of Surveillance Software

The French National Commission on Informatics and Liberty (Cnil) has issued several warnings against the Ministry of Interior and six municipalities for the unlawful use of surveillance software. This came after an investigation revealed unauthorized use of facial recognition technology, contradicting French law. The Ministry acknowledged at least one instance of illegal use and committed to compliance. Cnil’s report also highlighted delays in document submissions for legal compliance, stressing that beyond specific legal frameworks for the 2024 Olympic Games, real-time augmented cameras are prohibited.
