French Savings Withdrawals Exceed Deposits for First Time Since 2019
In October 2024, French households withdrew €1.94 billion more from their Livret A accounts than they deposited, a trend not seen since the Covid-19 pandemic. This ‘décollecte’ is attributed to increased spending during the month, including property taxes and adjustments to income tax. The decline in inflation has encouraged renewed consumer spending. Additionally, the Livret d’épargne populaire, offering a higher interest rate, has attracted savers. The total savings on these accounts now amounts to €582 billion, prompting government interest in redirecting funds towards innovation.
