Georgia’s Opposition Calls for EU Sanctions Amid Protests Against Government

Tina Bokuchava, leader of Georgia’s United National Movement, urged the European Union to impose targeted sanctions on Georgian officials involved in the crackdown on pro-EU protests in Tbilisi. The protests, now ongoing for 19 days, were sparked by the government halting EU accession talks. Bokuchava criticized the legitimacy of the recent parliamentary election and the new president-elect, Mikheil Kavelashvili, warning that the country’s political crisis may deepen following the change in leadership. Opposition parties demand a re-run of the election.
