Global CO2 Emissions Set to Reach Record High in 2024
A new study by the Global Carbon Project reveals that carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel combustion are on track to hit an unprecedented 37.4 billion tons in 2024, a 0.8% increase from 2023. Overall emissions, including land-use changes, may rise to 41.6 billion tons, representing a 2.5% surge. Despite significant advancements in renewable energy and electric vehicles, experts indicate that the peak in fossil fuel use has not yet been reached. The study highlights the shrinking carbon budget, warning that failing to curb emissions could lead to exceeding the critical 1.5°C global warming limit within six years.
