Global Rise in Diabetes Linked to Sugary Drink Consumption, Study Finds

A new study published in ‘Nature Medicine’ reveals that sugary drinks are responsible for one in ten diabetes cases worldwide, with significant links to heart diseases as well. Researchers analyzed data from 184 countries, determining that 2.2 million new cases of Type 2 diabetes and 1.2 million cardiovascular diseases in 2020 were attributed to sugary beverages. Political measures are deemed necessary to combat this trend, particularly in regions like Latin America and Africa, where the consumption of these drinks is notably high.
