Guantanamo Prisoner Transferred to Tunisia, Leaving 26 Remaining
The U.S. Department of Defense has announced the transfer of a Guantanamo detainee, Rida Ben Saleh Al Yazidi, to Tunisia, reducing the number of prisoners at the military facility to 26. Al Yazidi, one of the first detainees sent to Guantanamo in 2002, was transferred after a thorough review involving multiple agencies. Among those still detained is Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the September 11 attacks. Both President Joe Biden and former President Barack Obama have pledged to close the facility, which has hosted around 800 detainees since opening.
