High Court Orders Release of Teacher Enoch Burke After 500 Days in Jail
The High Court has ordered the release of Enoch Burke, a school teacher who was imprisoned for over 500 days for contempt of court. Burke was jailed for refusing to comply with a court order to stay away from Wilson’s Hospital School in Co Westmeath. Judge David Nolan imposed a daily fine of €1,400 if Burke breaches the order upon the school’s reopening. He currently owes €193,000 in fines without having paid any. The case is adjourned until January 21, with a requirement for representatives from the Department of Finance and Attorney General to appear.
