High Injury Risks and Mental Strain in Professional Football Players: New Study Findings
A six-month study commissioned by FIFPro reveals that professional football players face physical and mental strain due to demanding schedules. Researchers from the University of Louvain found that players are 1,000 times more likely to be injured compared to regular workers, with an average of 36 injuries per 1,000 match hours. They recommend a minimum of 96 hours of recovery between matches, which is often unfeasible for international players. Symptoms of depression and burnout are prevalent due to stress and irregular match timings. The report will be presented to the European Commission as evidence against FIFA’s overloaded schedules.
