Hong Kong Court Sentences Pro-Democracy Activists to Long Prison Terms
Benny Tai and 44 other pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong have been sentenced to prison terms of up to 10 years under the national security law enacted in 2020. This marks the longest sentences handed down to date, following a trial described as the largest of its kind in Hong Kong. The sentences have drawn condemnation from the United States, Australia, and human rights organizations, who view them as evidence of the declining political freedoms in Hong Kong since increased control by Beijing.
