Over the past decade, Hong Kong has experienced explosive pro-democracy protests, with significant events such as the Umbrella Movement and the 2019 demonstrations. However, in the face of Beijing’s increasing control and national security laws, the city has seen a dramatic suppression of dissent, leading to disillusionment among activists. This article reflects on the changes in Hong Kong, personal stories of activists and exiles, and the poignant struggle to remember a freer past amidst growing censorship and an altered identity.
