Increased Violence and Fire Incidents Mark New Year’s Eve in the Netherlands
The police reported a tumultuous New Year’s Eve in the Netherlands, with a significant rise in incidents and violence against officers. Over 8,292 incidents were recorded, including 2,039 fireworks-related events, reflecting a 9% increase from previous years. Emergency services faced aggression, with 295 police and 49 other first responders affected. Despite the increase, arrests were down. Minister of Justice and Security, Mark van Weel, noted that while many areas were relatively calm, there remains a need for a stringent approach to lawbreakers and no national fireworks ban is currently being considered.
