Indonesia Initiates Mass Evacuations as Volcano Erupts, Claiming Lives and Damaging Homes

Indonesian authorities are evacuating over 16,000 residents from villages near the active Lewotolok volcano on Flores Island, following multiple eruptions that have resulted in nine fatalities and damage to thousands of homes. Since the volcano erupted Sunday, nearly 2,500 residents have been relocated to temporary shelters more than 20 kilometers from the crater. The emergency response is challenging due to thick volcanic ash obstructing roads. Local authorities have declared a state of emergency for 58 days, allowing for increased central government assistance as four nearby airports have been closed.
