Innovative LED Surfboards Could Reduce Shark Attacks
A study published in Current Biology reveals that equipping surfboards with bright LED lights may lessen shark attacks. Conducted by biologist Laura Ryan from Macquarie University, the research found that illuminated boards were less likely to attract great white sharks, particularly in South Africa’s Mossel Bay. In tests, bright lights distorted the shape of the boards, making them less appealing to sharks, which often attack from below. Future prototypes could be developed for both surfboards and kayaks, offering a less invasive alternative to traditional shark monitoring methods.
