Introduction of Smart Meters in Greece to Enhance Energy Efficiency
Greece is gradually installing smart electric meters, which will enable new features like special heating tariffs, energy pre-purchase discounts, and automatic fault management. A cost-benefit study by DEDDIE shows these smart meters will facilitate differentiated pricing for heating and electric vehicles, encouraging users to reduce energy consumption during peak hours. The installation process is set to conclude by 2030, with 7.1 million meters planned. Despite the significant costs, the anticipated benefits to consumers are estimated at €1.1 to €1.6 billion due to reduced energy theft and operational costs.
