Investigation Reveals Misread Smear Tests Led to Cancer in Eight Women
A review by the Southern Health Trust in Northern Ireland has identified eight women who developed cancer after their cervical smear tests were misread. Additionally, 11 women were found to have pre-cancerous changes requiring treatment. The review was initiated due to serious concerns regarding the diagnostic accuracy of cervical screening between 2008 and 2021. Campaigners are calling for a public inquiry, citing systemic failures in management and screening processes over a decade. The trust has acknowledged the distress caused and is implementing changes, including adopting HPV screening.
