Ireland Enacts New Hate Crime Legislation to Strengthen Protection Against Hate-Motivated Offences

Ireland has implemented new hate crime legislation, the Criminal Justice (Hate Offences) Act 2024, which increases prison sentences for crimes motivated by hatred based on race, sexual orientation, and other factors. Minister for Justice Helen McEntee emphasized the importance of this legislation in addressing hate crimes, noting Ireland’s previous lack of specific hate crime laws despite rising hate crime statistics. The new law follows extensive public consultation and aims to protect vulnerable communities from the impact of hate speech and hate crimes.
