Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi Addresses Immigration Detention Centers in Albania
Matteo Piantedosi, Italy’s Minister of the Interior, commented on the status of Italian immigration detention centers established in Albania, which remain empty following court rulings against holding asylum seekers. He noted the lack of immediate need to reopen these centers and indicated that migrant arrivals from North Africa to southern Italy have significantly decreased. Piantedosi also dismissed rumors about these centers being converted into dog shelters as mere jokes. The Italian Supreme Court’s decision on the matter may be delayed pending a European Union court’s input.
