Launch of France’s Most Powerful Nuclear Reactor Promises New Era in Energy Production
On December 20, 2024, France’s newest and most powerful nuclear reactor, the EPR of Flamanville, is set to be connected to the national grid after 17 years of construction and 12 years of delays. With a capacity of 1600 megawatts, it will eventually provide electricity to two million households. While initial output will be minimal, the connection marks a significant achievement for EDF and a symbolic return to nuclear energy projects in France, 50 years after the local council’s approval for the plant’s construction.
