LED Lights on Surfboards May Reduce Great White Shark Attacks, Study Finds

Australian researchers from Macquarie University suggest that attaching LED lights to surfboards could deter great white sharks from attacking surfers. Their study, published in Current Biology, discovered that brighter lights disrupted the sharks’ ability to identify the silhouettes of potential prey. The trial, conducted in South Africa, tested various light intensities and found that horizontal-aligned lights were less appealing to the predators. This innovative method could provide a non-invasive solution to enhance safety for surfers along with the need for further research on other shark species.
