Lewes Lights Up for Historic Guy Fawkes Night Celebration
Tens of thousands gathered in Lewes for the annual Guy Fawkes Night bonfire celebrations, a tradition dating back to 1795. As torch-bearing bonfire societies paraded through the streets, colorful effigies and tableaux reflected contemporary themes, including political figures and social concerns. The evening concluded with vibrant fireworks, as crowds enjoyed the festive atmosphere amidst tight security measures to ensure safety due to the event’s popularity. This year marked not only a celebration of the Gunpowder Plot but also a remembrance of historical figures persecuted during the reign of Mary I.
