Mass Grave of Kurdish Women and Children Unearthed in Southern Iraq
Iraqi authorities have initiated the exhumation of remains from a mass grave containing approximately 100 Kurdish women and children believed to be victims of former dictator Saddam Hussein’s regime in the 1980s. The grave was located near Tal al-Shaikhiya in Al-Muthanna province. Exhumation efforts revealed the victims were dressed in Kurdish clothing, with many having been executed by gunfire. Saddam Hussein, ousted in 2003, was previously convicted of genocide against the Kurds, resulting in the deaths of around 180,000 during the Anfal Campaign.
