Massive Protests in Wellington Against Controversial Maori Treaty Law
Tens of thousands gathered in Wellington, New Zealand, to protest a proposed law that seeks to reinterpret the founding treaty between the indigenous Maori and the British Crown. The demonstration, marking the end of a nine-day peaceful protest, saw around 42,000 participants. Maori MPs protested using a traditional Haka dance in Parliament as the controversial bill advanced despite widespread opposition. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and the National Party have indicated they will not support the law, which aims to address perceived inequalities faced by non-indigenous citizens.
