Meta Fined €251 Million for Data Breach Affecting 29 Million Facebook Accounts

The Irish Data Protection Commission has imposed a €251 million fine on Meta following a personal data breach that compromised around 29 million Facebook accounts. Reported in September 2018, the breach involved unauthorized access to sensitive user information, including names, emails, and more. The DPC emphasized the serious risks of inadequate data protection measures during development. Meta plans to appeal the decision, which is part of a total of €2.8 billion in fines from the DPC, of which only €17 million has been collected due to ongoing legal disputes.
