Moldova Enacts 60-Day State of Emergency Amidst Russian Gas Supply Concerns
The Parliament of Moldova has declared a 60-day state of emergency starting December 16, in response to anticipated disruptions in Russian gas supplies set to begin January 1. Prime Minister Dorin Recean emphasized the need to protect the separatist Transdniestria region from ‘gas blackmail’ by Moscow, which he claims aims to destabilize Moldova. The government warns that failing to supply gas could trigger a humanitarian crisis and affect the stability of the electricity sector, as Moldova receives significant gas supplies from Russia, primarily routed through Ukraine.
