Moldova’s Presidential Runoff: Maia Sandu Faces Alexandr Stoianoglo Amid Election Tensions
On Sunday, Moldova’s presidential runoff commenced smoothly, with pro-Western incumbent Maia Sandu seeking a second term against former Attorney General Alexandr Stoianoglo, who represents the pro-Russian Socialists. The election’s outcome is uncertain, with Sandu winning 42.45% in the first round and Stoianoglo trailing at 25.98%. Sandu has warned of potential vote-buying and foreign interference, particularly from Russia, raising concerns over organized voter transport. As Moldovan citizens abroad also cast their votes, results are expected to be announced on Monday.
