Myanmar Faces Alarming Surge in Landmine Casualties in 2023

Myanmar has become the country with the highest number of landmine casualties in 2023, according to the annual report from the Landmine and Cluster Munition Monitor. The report reveals that at least 5,757 people were killed or injured globally due to landmines and unexploded ordnance, with 84% of victims being civilians. Myanmar alone accounted for 1,003 casualties, surpassing Syria, Afghanistan, Ukraine, and Yemen. The increase in landmine usage by the military has escalated since the February 2021 coup, which has intensified violence and conflict in the region.
