Netherlands Ends Gas Extraction from Groningen Field as Energy Needs Persist
For the first time since 1963, there will be no gas from the Groningen field flowing into Dutch pipelines this winter. Despite this, the Netherlands continues to rely on significant gas imports to meet domestic demand. The government has approved continued extraction from smaller fields in Groningen, while also facing protests against gas extraction projects, particularly under the Wadden Sea. Given the ongoing seismic risks and dependency on fossil fuels, the transition to alternative heating sources remains a pressing concern for the country.
