New Guidelines Aim to End Seclusion Practices for Children in Schools

The Department of Education has introduced new guidelines to eliminate the seclusion of students as a form of punishment in schools. The rules state that involuntary isolation is inappropriate, and physical restraint should only occur in cases of imminent risk of harm. All incidents of restraint must be reported, and training for school staff will be provided, prioritizing special schools. The guidelines follow a report by Inclusion Ireland concerning the adverse experiences of children subjected to these practices.
