In 2023, Switzerland saw 9,297 new sentencing executions, marking a slight increase from 2022. Notably, 91% of those incarcerated were men, with approximately two-thirds lacking Swiss citizenship. The majority of sentences included prison time for offenses, with 38% receiving custodial sentences and 42% replacement sentences for unpaid fines. While many individuals served brief terms, 8,825 were released this year, with half incarcerated for under 30 days.
