New UN Agency Announced for Protection of Undersea Cables

The United Nations’ International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has established a new entity focused on safeguarding undersea cables that carry over 99% of international data. This initiative follows significant incidents of cable damage, suspected to be acts of sabotage, particularly in the Baltic Sea. The new advisory group, consisting of 40 experts from both public and private sectors, aims to enhance the resilience and maintenance of this crucial infrastructure, amidst increasing reports of damages caused largely by natural factors and accidents. A summit is planned for February 2025 in Nigeria.
