NHS Introduces Enhanced Stop Smoking Pill to Combat Cigarette Addiction
The NHS is launching an improved version of the smoking cessation pill Varenicline, effective for those looking to quit smoking in England. Varenicline, previously withdrawn due to impurities, has now been approved as safe and is shown to be more effective than nicotine gum or patches. It works by alleviating cravings and withdrawal symptoms and is available only through prescriptions. This initiative aims to help over 85,000 smokers annually, potentially reducing smoking-related deaths by 9,500 in five years, according to NHS England and University College London research.
