Orange Fined €50 Million for Misleading Email Advertisements

The French telecommunications operator Orange has been fined €50 million by the CNIL for displaying advertisements within users’ emails without their consent. This practice, identified as advertising masquerading as emails, was deemed a violation of regulations. Although Orange ceased this method in November 2023 and introduced a clearer advertising format, the CNIL highlighted the financial benefits gained from these misleading advertisements in setting the penalty.
