Organ Transplants in Ireland Decrease Slightly in 2023

In 2023, Ireland recorded 263 organ transplants, a decrease from 282 in 2022. The figures include contributions from 84 deceased and 30 living donors. Authorities emphasize the importance of discussing organ donation intentions, highlighting personal stories such as that of William Mills, who received a kidney and pancreas transplant last year. Outgoing Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly also noted the forthcoming Human Tissue Act 2024, which will introduce ‘deemed consent’ for organ donation, aiming to expand the donor pool while respecting individual wishes.
