Outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo: Dozens Dead Amid Unidentified Illness

In the southwest of the Democratic Republic of Congo, dozens have died from an unidentified illness, with symptoms resembling influenza. The outbreak occurred in the Kwango region, where malnutrition has made the population particularly vulnerable. As of December 8, the WHO reports at least 31 confirmed deaths in healthcare facilities, with additional deaths at home. Experts are investigating various hypotheses, including zoonotic diseases. The Congolese government and WHO are sending specialists to understand the outbreak, but accessibility challenges complicate their efforts.
