Overpayment Debt from Carer’s Allowance Surges to £250 Million

The National Audit Office reports that outstanding overpayment debt related to Carer’s Allowance has climbed to over £250 million, a £100 million increase since 2018/19. Carers UK criticizes the system as failing unpaid carers, especially after an independent review was initiated due to financial hardships faced by some. The Department for Work and Pensions revealed £3.7 billion was paid to over 900,000 claimants last year, but strict earning thresholds create significant financial risks for caregivers.
