Businessman and former presidential candidate Peter Casey has been awarded €140,000 in damages for defamation following malicious remarks made by acupuncturist Kim McMenamin on Facebook. The court found McMenamin’s comments about Casey’s intentions to provide accommodation for Ukrainian refugees to be defamatory and untrue. Judge David Nolan emphasized the severe emotional impact of the post on Casey and his family, awarding €120,000 for damages and an additional €20,000 for aggravated damages due to McMenamin’s refusal to remove the post.
