In Alexandroupolis, countless anchovies have found refuge in the port, creating an impressive spectacle that occurs almost every year during strong winds in the Thracian Sea and the birth season of young anchovies. Kostas Zitsis, the president of the amateur fishermen’s association, explained that this annual winter phenomenon sees young fish congregating in the small harbor for about two months where fishing is completely prohibited, ensuring their safety until they depart after late January.
