Prejudice Against Traveller and Roma Communities in Ireland Highlights Social Disparities
A report from the Economic and Social Research Institute reveals that the Traveller and Roma communities in Ireland face significant prejudice, particularly in affluent areas. While people are more comfortable having these communities in schools, discomfort arises regarding personal relationships. The study shows attitudes are particularly negative towards Travellers in the west and midlands, while those in disadvantaged areas display more tolerance. Research author Frances McGinnity notes that economic factors influence comfort levels, indicating that anti-Traveller racism may be uniquely distinct from other prejudices.
