ProRail to Reduce Heated Switches for Cost and Environmental Benefits

ProRail plans to deactivate half of its heating installations for railway switches starting next year, attributing the decision to milder winters and the reduced need for ice and snow prevention. Currently, there are 4,500 heating units, but this number will be halved, saving an estimated €17 million annually on maintenance and energy costs. Remaining systems will be upgraded to use electricity instead of gas, contributing to reduced CO2 emissions.
