Protests Planned in Megalopolis Against Coal Plant Closure
The municipality of Megalopolis is organizing a rally on November 20, 2024, in response to the closure of the 4th lignite unit and related mines of the Public Power Corporation (DEI). Mayor Kostas Michopoulos announced the demonstration, coinciding with nationwide strikes by GSEE and ADEDY. Plans include gathering in the central square, releasing a statement against the premature closure, and holding a special council session. Meanwhile, discussions continue about voluntary exit programs for DEI employees, amidst concerns over job stability and the future of Megalopolis as an energy hub.
