Puerto Rico Faces Widespread Power Outage Following Distribution Network Failure

Puerto Rico woke up in darkness due to a distribution network failure that left nearly the entire island without electricity. Around 90% of customers were affected early in the morning, and Luma Energy estimates it could take 24 to 48 hours to restore power. Preliminary investigations suggest a fault in an underground line may be to blame. The outage has been described as a serious incident, with Genera’s power units also impacted. The island struggles with frequent power disruptions amid crumbling infrastructure, especially after Hurricane Maria in 2017.
