Rapid Glacier Loss in the Pyrenees Linked to Extreme Climate Conditions
A new study by Spanish and French researchers highlights a significant decline in the mass of Pyrenean glaciers between 2020 and 2023, attributed to extreme heat and drought conditions. The research details the critical state of the remaining 15 glaciers, which now cover only 143.2 hectares and are at risk of disappearing. Using advanced drones and radar technology, scientists have documented a staggering 39.8% reduction in glaciated area over the three-year period, raising alarms about the potential extinction of these glaciers in the near future.
