Rare Bahamonde Beaked Whale Carcass Examined in New Zealand

Scientists in New Zealand have studied the carcass of a rare Bahamonde beaked whale, revealing tiny undeveloped teeth and nine stomach chambers. The five-meter-long whale was discovered near Dunedin and has provided insights into the whale’s evolution and biology. The examination involved collaboration with Maori representatives, merging indigenous and Western knowledge systems. The findings, which might shed light on the whale’s mysterious life and potential causes of death, will soon be displayed at the TÅ«hura Otago Museum.
