Rare Pygmy Hippo Calf Born at Edinburgh Zoo
Edinburgh Zoo has welcomed an astonishingly rare female pygmy hippo calf named Haggis, born on October 30. Zookeepers report that her vibrant personality is already emerging. With only about 2,500 pygmy hippos left in the wild, the species is classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. To ensure Haggis’s healthy development, the zoo will close the pygmy hippo house for a month as the first 30 days are deemed critical for the newborn’s growth.
