Record High Incarceration Rate in France Amidst Overcrowding Crisis
France is experiencing a record high incarceration rate, with 80,792 individuals detained in facilities designed for only 62,404, leading to extreme overcrowding. More than 4,000 inmates are forced to sleep on mattresses on the floor. The overall prison density reached 129.5%, with some facilities exceeding 200%. France ranks third in the EU for overcrowding, following Cyprus and Romania, despite efforts to address the situation through prison reforms and construction plans.
