Record Number of Children in State Care Due to Unaccompanied Minors in Germany
In 2023, the number of children and adolescents taken into state care in Germany reached a record high, with a 12% increase, totaling 74,600 cases, primarily due to unaccompanied minors. Of these cases, 53% involved children who entered the country alone. A third of these placements were due to urgent child welfare concerns. The statistics indicate that a significant number of children came from unstable home environments, and nearly half were relocated to new settings, often in institutional care.
