Record Number of Homeless Individuals in the U.S. Surpasses 770,000 in Early 2024

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced that over 770,000 people were identified as homeless at the beginning of 2024, marking an 18% increase from 2023. Contributing factors include the shortage of affordable housing, inflation, immigration, the end of pandemic-related assistance, and natural disasters. The report highlights significant disparities, particularly among African American communities, who represent 32% of the homeless population. California is home to nearly a quarter of the homeless individuals in the country.
